He later opened a shop in Kalk Bay and in 1942 he opened a shop on Fish Hoek’s Main Road/corner Recreation Road which was known affectionately as Kent’s Corner (which is the South East corner of Devonshire House developed by Mr A. Real Estate.

Located at the site of a demolished double-story building housing three shops co-located with the late Dr Ben Seftel’s former residence upstairs and his rooms on Central Road in the 1950s – “St Malo”. A 1938 directory indicates that “St Malo” was the residence of Mrs A. Gilmour (88?) and next door Mrs G. O’Connor (90?) “Killarney”. It is presumed that Seftel merged the two units into one as his street address was “88-90”. According to the same directory Dr Seftel also owned the Kosher hotel “Mountain View” in Alexander Road, Muizenberg at the time. Refer Old Hotel Trail for location. He is radio personality Dr Ben Seftel’s cousin. Regarding the shops mentioned above, the centre shop in the 1960s was AP Jones Mens/Sport Department run by Fritz Bing, now the owner of AP Jones. He was once the manager of the SA Cricket team.

Comment: St Malo is a walled port city in Brittany in north western France on the English Channel. During the Middle Ages it was a fortified island at the mouth of the Rance River, controlling not only the estuary but the open sea beyond.  Modern St-Malo traces its origins to a monastic settlement founded by saints Aaron and Brendan early in the sixth century. In later centuries it became notorious as the home of a fierce breed of pirate-mariners, who were never quite under anybody's control but their own; for four years from 1590 it even declared itself to be an independent republic. The corsaires of St-Malo not only forced English ships passing up the Channel to pay tribute, but also brought wealth from further afield. Jacques Cartier, who colonized Canada, lived in and sailed from St Malo, as did the first colonists to settle the Falklands – hence the islands' Argentinian name, Las Malvinas, from the French Malouins. It reportedly has one of the highest concentration of seafood restaurants in Europe and is famous for its local oysters from the nearby village of Cancale.

Bible Institute Of South Africa

180 Main Road, Kalk Bay

Tel: 021 788 4116

[email protected]

From the very beginning it has been our aim to train and equip men and women to know Christ and to make Him known.

BISA has a long record of consistently and faithfully training ministers, missionaries, lecturers, teachers and church workers in Bible and theology. Moreover, many Christians have been better prepared for effective witness in the professional world. Students are drawn from, and go out to minister in, many different countries in Africa and the wider world.

As a non-denominational institution our point of departure in all things is the Bible. The Bible is the verbally inspired, infallible and inerrant Word of God. It is complete in its revelation, final in its content and absolute in its authority. Teaching God's Word at BISA, we aim to cultivate within our students a desire to obey God and to inspire hearts and minds with His truth. Students must study the Word of God and learn to handle and communicate it competently.

Theologically, BISA is an evangelical college committed to the historical, Protestant, evangelical faith. We therefore recognise the universal sinfulness and helplessness of mankind, the sufficiency of the substitutionary sacrifice of Jesus Christ for salvation, the justification of the sinner by the grace of God through faith in Christ alone, the necessity of the regenerating and sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit in the believer, and the requirement of the holy life as evidence of salvation.

The Bible Institute Chapel is home to the Kalk Bay Community Church. This interdenominational church is pastored by the Rev. Willem Conradie, one of the faculty of the college. Willem also heads up the Kalk Bay Ministry to the village community, in which a number of students are involved.

1.    The Bible Institute of South Africa was founded in 1923 and was established as an evangelical and interdenominational training centre. Historic buildings on the Campus are Roxton (c1920) and The Chapel (c1923).

2.     Whale sightings log sponsor 2011.

4.     Regarding the history of the brand, Fish Hoek Valley Museum records show that Mr E.G. (Ted) Holwill bought the business from Mr Michael Kent on his arrival from Johannesburg in 1934 and continued to trade as Kent’s Stores. He also traded as a Man’s Shop in 1951/2 further up at 8 York Road and it is suspected that this was his first shop. Mr Holwill’s name was found painted in gold paint above the doorway during restoration work and remains there to this day – see opposite. He later traded in Kalk Bay from Dukehaven Building, now the Orange Building (– Nr ) and from 1942 on Fish Hoek’s Main Road/corner Recreation Road which was known affectionately as Kent’s Corner. Mr EG Holwill’s son Derek later developed The Arcade, Fish Hoek’s first shopping centre.

5.     The gable is a significant landmark (see opposite).

6.     Regarding the architectural history of the building, historian Mike Walker writes that the building was a single story when built in 1916 and extended in 1929 by two floors. The architect was Charles Henry Smith (1863 – 1930) who was best known for his pioneering knowledge of reinforced concrete and fireproofing. He died at his residence “The Rest” on the corner of Milner and Bonair Roads, Rondebosch in 1930.
